Mbombela’s beloved songbird bags Basadi in Music accolade

Phumla Nkomo was named Kaya 959 Afro-pop Artist of the Year at the first Basadi in Music Awards 2022.

Social media went abuzz this weekend, celebrating Phumla Nkomo’s music award for the Kaya 959 Afro-pop Artist of the Year at the inaugural Basadi in Music Awards 2022.

“I am so humbled. It is a beautiful self-praising moment. I am getting recognised outside my home as an independent artist. This moment is worth celebrating. I appreciate the support that the people of Mpumalanga have showed me,” Nkomo said.

She said she could not believe she won what was a tight nomination alongside other female artists in the country.

“I was shocked and my knees nearly gave up on me when I went to the stage, but I regained my balance as I delivered my gratitude speech.”
Nkomo said the accolade is significant to her. “I have been in the music industry for over 10 years. It is not until this past Saturday that I got my recognition as a female musician, not only in Mpumalanga, but nationwide. There are still more awards coming, and I hope my music lovers will continue supporting music.”

She said she was happy she had never given up on what music is to her, a calling.

“Whatever I can put my mind to, means anything is possible. I encourage people to never give up on their passions and calling, and always remember that it should not feel like a job. I am blessed to have people who also believe in my calling,” Nkomo said.

Nkomo said she will be dropping a single on Friday October 28.

“I am so excited for this new song. I am not hosting any listening sessions as usual prior the release. The song is called “Ubuye”. It is about the relationship of a man and wife. The wife longs for her husband to come back, as he is constantly away,” she said.

The new single will be available on digital music platforms.
