Top speakers to address mental health seminar in Mbombela

The seminar seeks to create awareness and condemn the stigmatisation of mental health issues.

Top speakers will make their way to the Capital Hotel in Mbombela for the annual mental health seminar on October 29.

Proudly hosted by mental health activist Pr Conny Ntshane, this seminar will address burning issues of mental health, often not discussed especially among Africans.

The seminar will see the likes of Dr Eric Khumalo, radio presenter Kede Mkhabela, TV star LaConco, Dr Sibongile Sithole, musician Dudu Makhoba, Fezile Moyo, Pr Elaine Nkosi, Dr AC Lawrence, Lethabo LeJoy Mathatho and Ronny Masilela sharing the stage and arming those in attendance with life-empowering information on this subject.

“This seminar seeks to create awareness on mental health issues, empower people, deliver them and liberate them, because once you are defeated in your mind, you are automatically defeated in all aspect of your life,” said Ntshane, explaining the purpose behind the seminar.

She stressed that mental health issues are still regarded taboo and therefore not openly discussed at all among black people.

She said even from a church perspective, issues of mental health are not discussed or given the priority they deserve.

“Christ himself says let he who is sick, go and see a physician. Now, the dictionary clearly describes a physician as a person who cures moral or spiritual ills, or as a healer of souls. We are a spirit with a soul and live in a body, and both the spirit and the body need to be fed. And so, when people are diagnosed with chronic ailments, we tend to think that only prayer works, and this is where we are missing the point.

“There is no way that God can allow all professionals to exist if they are not meant to assist us on this planet Earth. And so, the sooner people start realising that mental health is not demonic, but a chronic disease, the sooner they will see the need to seek assistance from professionals and eventually get help,” said Ntshane.
