MEC condemns theft and vandalism at Rob Ferreira Hospital, allegedly by department officials

In a statement, the Department of Health said the stealing of copper pipes was primarily observed on August 12.

The MEC for health, Sasekani Manzini, has learnt about an act of theft and vandalism that occurred at Rob Ferreira Hospital, allegedly committed by three departmental officials based at the same hospital.

They were arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) on Monday September 19.In a statement, the Department of Health said the stealing of copper pipes was primarily observed and experienced on August 12.

The mortuary unit was vandalised, leading to the immense proportionate dysfunctionality of fridges.

“This resulted in the department putting measures in place to monitor the related occurrences leading to the apprehension of a suspect on August 17, who was found with equipment purportedly used to commit this despicable crime. The department, through the security company, accordingly handed over the suspect to the SAPS in the hopes that this act would stop following the arrest,” said Manzini.

“Contrary, the incidences of vandalism and theft of copper continued unabated. The subsequent SAPS investigation resulted in the confiscation of a vehicle allegedly used to move the stolen good, which led to the exposure and arrest of three officials appointed by the department,” she explained.
Manzini said she was taken aback by criminal elements at the hands of officials appointed to assist her in safeguarding and maintaining the public infrastructure, assets and property.

“I am extremely saddened to learn that the officials who should be at the forefront of protecting hospital infrastructure, stand accused of being part of a criminal element that undermines the importance to preserve public assets acquired to provide quality healthcare services.”
