MTN 8 legends parade trophy in Mpumalanga

The roadshow featured some of the MTN 8 legends who were the winners of the competition in previous years and have since retired from professional football.

The MTN 8 Wafa Wafa Trophy Interprovincial Roadshow returned to Mpumalanga this year, after it had been halted two years ago by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The MTN 8 competition is one of the oldest domestic cup competitions in South African elite football, in which the teams that wrapped up their season in the top eight battle it out for the R8m prize money.

The roadshow featured some of the MTN 8 legends who are the winners of the competition from previous years and have since retired from professional football.

The roadshow in Mpumalanga featured ambassadors, retired legends and previous winners from the two Soweto-based teams, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
This year’s MTN 8 legends include the former Mamelodi Sundowns skipper Hlompho Kekana, Josta Dladla, Morgan Gould, Fabian McCarthy, Njabulo Maqana and Tyren Arendse

Lucky Lekgwathi, Itumeleng Mokoena and Brilliant Khuzwayo.

The trophy roadshow began in Ermelo on Thursday September 8, then proceeded to Mbombela later that day. Day two proceeded to Nkomazi, where locals and radio stations had an opportunity to see the trophy and engage with the legends.

The former Orlando Pirates skipper, fondly known by his fans as Captain Fantastic Lucky Lekgwathi, arguably the most successful captain in the Sea Robbers’ history, is one of the ambassadors who interacted with the people of Mpumalanga by sharing his football career journey.

Lekgwathi said the fixture between the Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates is a tough one, and unpredictable.
“Since Pirates have a history of being humiliated by Sundowns, I am unable to determine who will win. Given how the Tshwane side began this year’s season, I have no doubt that Pirates have studied Sundowns by this point and are capable of competing with them,” he said.

In another fixture, Kaizer Chiefs will go head to head against AmaZulu.
