Emalahleni young men pioneer Happy Majita Monday movement

The movement is aimed at creating a safe emotional space for men.

Most could have seen young men posting pictures or messages with the #HappyMajitaMonday mostly on Mondays. Well, this is a movement striving to create a safe space for men to talk about their emotional intelligence and mental wellness.

The movement is pioneered by Mpumelelo Makena from eMalahleni with his six male friends on most social media platforms, but have seen women taking interest in participating in their conversations.

“We started participating in this movement in an ice-cream or smoothie date at a park. We would gather our close friends to talk about the issues that as men face and try to find solutions together. We would take pictures with our placards stating Happy Majita Monday, which attracted a lot of people into the movement,” Makena said.

He said that they call themselves pioneers of the movement because the idea is not originally theirs. “A few years ago, I saw a post on social media, on which the person was also pioneering the movement. I was fascinated and wanted to engage in such. I then told my friends about it and we have been at it successfully for about seven months now.”

Makena said that he appreciates the surprising support for the movement receives from local men. “We get invited to local events and socialise with other men, which is a way of learning from each other. A lot of men including myself have gained a great support system through this initiative.”

He added that as much as there are organisations that aim to uplift women in the community, he wishes to see the Happy Majita Monday movement becoming a well-known platform for men.
