Public rallies behind Mpumalanga hopeful ousted from Idols SA

An avid supporter started a petition to get Nondumiso Nkosi back in the competition.

Idols SA viewers were left with some confusion after Nondumiso Nkosi, widely known as Dudlu kaDlamini, was unexpectedly eliminated after Theatre Week in the current season 18 of the country’s biggest singing competition.

Nkosi, from Bhekisawayo near Numbi Gate, was disheartened for not making it to the top 12, after showcasing her stunning singing and performing skills. Unfortunately, the judges (Thembi Seete, Somizi Mhlongo and JR Bogopa) were not dazzled.

Most South Africans did not agree with the judges and took to social media to voice their opinions on how the local songstress was “unfairly” judged. This includes Johannesburg-based supporter Dineo Motaung, who started an online petition aiming to get Nkosi back into the competition. The petition was signed by more than 10 000 people in less than two weeks and the public remained hopeful that Idols SA would heed their call, but there seems to be no chance.

When approached by Mpumalanga News, a public relations specialist, Lucky Mangela of the competition, said, “Unfortunately, the judges’ decision is final and everyone is judged on the same merits.”

More than anything, Nkosi was elated about the support the country had shown her since her audition for the competition. “Everyone is talking about me and my ministry. The support is overwhelming and I am thankful to each person who wished to see me back into the competition, if it was ever possible,” she said.

The bubbly Nkosi said her little time on Idols SA was an unforgettable experience. “The experience taught me how to handle pressure and to be constantly be ready for anything. I had to remain cool and not erupt at any stage. Moreover, it has allowed me to keep an open mind.”

She said it was never a dream to take part in Idols SA, but more of a response to everyone who had prompted her to audition for the competition.

Nkosi has been singing and performing in church and in a local choir groups from an early age. She has been part of a line of music groups since high school and a backing vocalist for local artists. Becoming a solo artist about three years ago has given her an opportunity to make music with the province’s sensation, Mzwandile Moya, best known as Afrotraction.

Her recent music offering is a single with Njabulo WeMusic, titled “Bavumile”. The music video is on YouTube.

More determined than ever, Nkosi said she would keep working on her ministry by making and performing her own music.
