Self-employed Zwelisha woman makes stylish handbags

Nombuso Mathebula sells crocheted handbags made from recycled materials.

Nombuso Mathebula is a young woman who found employment through her talents and passion. She sells handcrafted bags and ties that she has beautifully crocheted from scratch, by using recycled materials.

Mathebula decided to start her own home-based business in Zwelisha called Crochet Palette in 2020, instead of seeking employment.
“I have always dreamt of having my own business and I am excited that I was able to use my talent to crochet to earn a living in a sustainable way. I can say that some of my dreams are coming true,” Mathebula said.

She produces a variety of handbags to suit anyone’s fashion style with many colours and designs from which to choose. With orders coming in slowly but surely, she believes that she will be able to employ young people.

“I know the experience of job seeking and not finding work. My long-term goal is to employ my peers who cannot find work. I want to bring a positive impact in my community and to inspire my peers that they can earn a living from their talents,” said Mathebula.

She was inspired by her sister, Patricia Madonsela, who has shown her continuous support since the start of the business. “She has played a huge role in my life and helped me to enhance my crocheting skills. We grew up crocheting together little things and I am glad to have her in my corner.”
