Mbombela school’s spellers to compete in national competition

Valencia Combined School is proud of the achievements of the spellers.

Three learners of Valencia Combined School will be competing in the national Masters Spelling Bee competition.
Ten spellers of this school competed in the provincial competition on July 23 at Anew Hotel, eMalahleni.

Sana Malek, Babongile Dube and Abdikarim Mohammed made it through to the next round, and they will be competing against various schools from other provinces in November.

Koketso Maphori, Seth Ndlovu, Siphesihle Nkosi, Azima Adrusi, Keitumetse Mailula, Mohammed Aman and Rayhaan Patel also competed. Mildred Mailula, Valencia Combined’s SGB chairperson, said the school was proud of all the leaners who had participated.

According to her, the learners who had represented the school in eMalahleni were chosen after some initial tests.

“The learners were given a spelling test. Those who got 80% or more qualified for the second round. They were then tested orally. There were three judges on the panel. In the final stage, 10 kids were selected to be registered to compete at the spelling bee competition.”

Mailula said four schools competed against Valencia Combined.

“We took them as a group and they competed individually, but all represented the school. This competition is to showcase their skills and abilities with spelling, while the kids develop linguistic skills and vocabulary. It is hosted by Masters Spelling Bee’s organisers.”
Masters Spelling Bee is a national competition that pits South Africa’s best spellers against one another.
