Old age centre in Pienaar receives winter blankets

The centre also runs educational classes to help them with reading, writing and learning about safety at home.

Heineken SA, Vulindlela Community Development, Faith 4 Hope Foundation and The Kedebone Mkhabela Foundation teamed up and rolled up their sleeves for a noble cause by donating blankets to an old age home in Pienaar.

These partners donated much-needed blankets to the Pienaar-based Siyaphila Old Age Centre in honour of the global icon and a former state president, Nelson Mandela, last Friday.

Siyaphila Old Age Home is a recreation centre for the elderly.

It is a safe haven for elderly persons who are looking for company in their old age, while doing recreational activities that keep them busy and help them to earn extra money as their only source of income is the government grant they receive monthly. They get daily meals and also produce traditional beads, garments for children, males and females, sleeping mats, cupboards, washing boards and many other products they sell to the surrounding communities.

Kede Mkhabela said they donated the blankets to the old age home as part of commemorating Mandela Month.

“We decided to team up in this fashion and do something meaningful with our time and resources. This is part of giving back to our communities, while at the same time honouring the legacy of our father, Mandela. This is just one of the many community-driven programmes we engage in,” said Mkhabela.
