Nominations for the annual Mpumalanga Sport Awards now open

These awards aim to recognise and honour individuals and teams that have excelled both on and off the field within particular period.

The road to the 2022 Mpumalanga Sports Awards has started in earnest with the opening of the nomination process.

The nomination process officially opened on July 16 and will close on August 15.

Nominations can be done on www.mpsawards.co.za or via email at info@mpsawards.co.za.

During this period, federations are requested to submit names of players and teams who have excelled on field of play from September 1, 2021, to August 31, 2022, and those who represented Mpumalanga with honour, dignity and excellence on big stages.

According to the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation’s spokesperson, Sibongile Nkosi, the Mpumalanga Sports Awards celebrates local individuals and teams who have done well in the world of sport.

 

 

“The Mpumalanga Sports Awards are aimed at honouring and celebrating local individuals and teams who put the province on the sporting map in 21 categories, with two of them conferred by the culture, sport and recreation MEC, Thandi Shongwe,” said Nkosi.

Last year, the Paralympic champion, Ntando Mahlangu, was the biggest winner at the awards when he walked away with the Sports Star of the Year Award and the MEC’s Special Award.

Categories that will be voted for by the public are sport star of the year, sport journalist of the year, sport photographer of the year and sport fan of the year, and the rest will be chosen by a panel of independent individuals from Mpumalanga sporting federations. The winners will be announced in a gala ceremony on September 18.

The categories are as follows:

• Sport administrator of the year
• School team of the year
• Developing school of the year
• Newcomer of the year
• Volunteer of the year
• Peoples’ choice sport star of the year
• Indigenous games star of the year
• Recreation body of the year
• Team of the year
• Coach of the year
• Sport club/federation of the year
• Sport woman of the year (with disability)
• Sport woman of the year
• Sport man of the year (with disability)
• Sport man of the year
• Sport journalist of the year
• Sport photographer of the year
• Sport star of the year and
• Sport fan of the year
• Lifetime achievement and sport legend (conferred by the MEC).
