Big Joe and his wife appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court

Joseph Nyalungu and his wife, Dudu Alicia Mathumbu, were arrested on Tuesday July 30 for contravening the Tax Administration Act by failing to submit their personal income tax.

Joseph Nyalungu (60), also known as Big Joe, and his wife, Dudu Alicia Mathumbu (56), along with their company, Mjingo Projects and Transport Services (Pty) Ltd appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, July 30.
They were arrested on the same day for failing to submit the company’s income tax as required by Section 25 of Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011, during the tax period for 2015 to 2023.

Nyalungu further contravened Section 234(2)(d) of the same Act. The Hawks’ provincial spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said Nyalungu failed to submit his personal income tax returns during the tax period for 2014 to 2023. Furthermore, Mathumbu also contravened this section of the Tax Administration Act by failing to submit her own income tax returns from 2011 to 2023. The estimated value involved is R13m.

The trio were released on R1 000 bail each, and the case was postponed to August 12 for it to be transferred to the Nelspruit Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. The investigation continues.
