Hard work can solve cash flow problems

To be a successful SME requires hard work, passion and control systems.

ABSA has embarked on a campaign to support and empower SMEs across South Africa.

We sat with Waterside Lodge to get a better understanding of their business.

When did you start your business?

We started the business in 1994.

What led you to pursue entrepreneurship?

I have always had a passion to make sure that every goal I set for my life, I achieve it. I wanted to challenge and push myself and then my passion led me to achieve my goals and pursue entrepreneurship.

What are the challenges you experience when you were starting your business and how did you overcome them?

As a start-up, you struggle with cash flow, you try to save up and deny yourself many things, and sometimes life can get demanding of your time. So to overcome my cash flow challenge, I put in more work and initially worked 15 hours every day.

What impact did the Covid-19 pandemic have on your business?

Covid-19 had a devastating impact on all hospitality businesses. Having to close the business due to no bookings had a negative impact on us as a business but we had strategies in place to ensure that we stay in business. It was sad seeing other businesses close and people losing their jobs.

What is your advice for SMEs?

My advice for SMEs is hard work and passion, and have control systems.
