A man allegedly fired shots at the police this morning, February 19, in an attempt to evade capture.

A 22-year-old man was arrested in Barberton following a shoot-out with police officials from the National Intervention Unit (NIU) at 07:15 today, February 19.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, as the police stopped the men to investigate the bag, they bolted.

“The members gave chase, and that is when one of the two men drew a handgun and started shooting at the police,” said Mohlala.

“The police responded by firing back and one suspect was shot. Fortunately, no SAPS member sustained injuries.”

He said the injured suspect could not produce a firearm licence and was arrested for attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

An ambulance was called to the scene and the man is currently in hospital under police guard.

Further investigation will be conducted to determine whether the firearm was used in other criminal activities.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court soon.

At the time of posting, it was unclear what had happened to the second suspect.
