New Year’s Eve crossover services: Are you ready, mzalwane?

With the many posts of missing people shared on social media, it is clear that not only kids go missing. This is why it is important to be extra cautious.

As the year ends, various churches host crossover celebration services, usually during the night.
With the current stats of missing people in South Africa, it is important to stay alert at all times and to stay safe.
There were also reports of church members in Mpumalanga who were attacked in church.
There are various things to consider, especially for those who will be walking from one village to another, those who will be using public transport, and those young teenagers planning to do other things before they go to church.
During an interview with renowned radio pastor and motivational speaker, Pr Negros Manana, he said it is important that people should be aware that when we discuss missing people, it can be anyone. According to him, it is important for local churches to beef up security and have relevant people monitoring everyone’s movements.
Manana said at Turning Point International Church, the crossover service will start at 21:00.
“We have arranged that there will be a team monitoring transport and parents dropping off young people.”
Manana said it is everyone’s responsibility to makes sure that the young people are safe.

Tips to stay safe, according to www.travelinsurance.ca:
• Do not walk the streets after dark
• Take a licensed taxi if you are going out at night
• Politely refuse anything you are offered by a ‘friendly’ stranger
• Don’t wear expensive items or flash around money and electronics.
• Distribute valuables across different pockets and consider having a decoy wallet with a few rand in it to fool muggers.
