Commercialisation of Christmas

Christmas has definitely taken a 180 degree turn over the years. Evidently, the popularity of xmas has significantly overshadowed the true essence of Christmas.

Christmas, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is defined as the annual Christian festival celebrating Christ’s birth, held on December 25 in the Western church. Now, there are arguments that Jesus was not born on December 25 but let’s disregard that because it really doesn’t matter.

Celebration concept giving a present

Christmas has grown popular in the course of commercialisation. Christmas decorations go up earlier and earlier each year. Head of families feels the pressure of Christmas when adverts create a hype that suggests that it is about expensive gifts, toys for your kids, holiday trips and food.

Christmas has deviated from Christianity, losing its religious significance, forgetting that it is actually about family, unconditional love and commemorating the birth of Jesus. Nativity plays performed by schools serve as a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.

It is fascinating how children comprehend the spirit of Christmas so well and illustrate it in song and in speech. Christmas is more than just presents; it’s about what it represents. We should give ourselves and our hearts to the Almighty Saviour and instead of getting trapped by expensive gifts, let us celebrate the gift of life. Joy, happiness, unconditional love and the camaraderie among friends, family and people from all walks of life is what counts the most.

Christmas is about loving each other unconditionally, the way He loves us. So, let us break the rules and ignore society and put Christ back in Christmas.
