Festive Season road safety campaign launched on R573

The launch is in line with the expected increase in traffic volumes due to the commencement of the holiday season.

The Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has officially launched the Festive Season Road Safety Awareness Campaign on the R573 on Tuesday November 29.

At the campaign, MEC Vusi Shongwe said, “We have done an analysis on the festive season last year and this year’s Easter long weekend. The analysis on drivers, trends and type of offences was taken into account as the information became vital for determining the activities and deployment of traffic officers and resources on various routes across the province. An increased focus will also be placed on moving traffic violations, which contribute to most of the deadly crashes.”

He said some of the activities planned for this busiest of seasons include block patrols and speed law enforcement, which will be rolled out throughout the province.

“These operations and others will focus on driver fitness and moving violations. Other road safety education includes pedestrian awareness campaigns. We will also work closely with other security agencies and conduct operations targeting drunken driving on specific routes during the peak holiday season,” said Shongwe. He stressed that motorists had to obey the rules and co-operate with law enforcement officials.

“The motorists must also ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before they start travelling. The law enforcement agencies are ready to deal with any mischief during the holiday season,” he said.
