Two trains collide near Lebombo border

The trains collided on the mainline between Mozambique and Komatipoort late on Tuesday afternoon. Investigations into the cause of the collision are under way.

Transnet Freight Rail has confirmed a train collision that occurred on the mainline between Ressano Garcia in Mozambique and Komatipoort in South Africa on Tuesday November 15.

According to a statement released by Transnet, the collision happened at 17:15 on Tuesday.

A statement by the railway company said a Transnet train operated by a crew from Mozambique Ports and Railways (CFM), collided with a CFM train that was shunting on the mainline between Ressano Garcia and Komatipoort.

“CFM is a state-owned company that oversees the railway system in Mozambique and its connected ports,” said the statement.

“The Transnet train. which had been loaded with magnetite, departed from Komatipoort and was destined for Ressano Garcia. Investigations are under way to determine the cause of the accident,” said the statement.
