EFF chief whip calls on Mpumalanga government to create jobs

The chief whip of the official opposition party in the Provincial Legislature, the EFF’s Ntsako Mkhabela, has called on the provincial government to help the young people of Victor Khanye Local Municipality with employment opportunities.

Mkhabela argued that with the high unemployment rate, government ought to make every opportunity available and put them to good use to address the issue.

“While it might be true that the outbreak of Covid-19 has caused much distress to our already crippled economy, we must also not shy away from the reality that our government is not doing enough to fight poverty, inequality and joblessness.

“The unemployment rate in the country and this province has reportedly gone up. We believe that every opportunity to create employment, especially for the youth, must be thoroughly investigated,” she said.

“To this end, the 39 young people drawn from the Victor Khanye Local Municipality in 2019, who were taken to an official training in traffic management, are still unemployed, even though they were promised employment upon completion of the training programme, promised guaranteed job placements as municipal traffic officials, but these young people are still jobless, and were told the municipality no longer had funds to hire them.

“The EFF would like to challenge the provincial government and the departments responsible for this matter to intervene in the Victor Khanye issue, because we are of the opinion that the municipality is throwing away a golden opportunity to create employment for its youth.”
