KaBokweni’s songstress makes the switch to DJ and breaks the door wide open

Deidree has just been invited to play as a DJ in Mozambique and the Kingdom of eSwatini, and she promised to dish out nothing but good music.

Watch out, DJ Zinhle, here comes Deidree. Having worked with a number of Mzansi’s notable talents within the music and entertainment space, music songstress Deidree’s career is taking a different path than the one she is known for.

Deidree revealed that she is moving from being a full-time vocalist to concentrating on her other talent and passion, which is DJing.

“I have always been in love with DJing, but never got the opportunity to be behind the decks, simply because all the DJs in the industry wanted to feature me as a vocalist,” she beamed. She has been featured and done so many collaborations with other equally talented and notable DJs, such as Sdunkero, Zester and Deep Forest.

“After all those years as a vocalist, I have decided to take this route and follow my passion as a DJ. I have spent my entire lockdown period polishing my skills as a DJ and I have been playing in gigs around the province.”
Just like DJ Zinhle and a few other notable female DJs in the country, Deidree wants to create her original material as an Afrotech house DJ, rather than just playing other musicians’ songs.

“There aren’t many female DJs in the entire country who produces their own original material, and I want to join the likes of DJ Zinhle and play my own original music. I know I can do better, simply because I have the experience in both worlds as a vocalist/composer and DJing as well,” she said.

“I want to be one of the female DJs who will bring talent behind the decks and make people dance, not to watch the DJ dance as we are seeing in gigs. DJs are meant to make the audience enjoy themselves because of the music. Look at the likes of DJ Black Coffee: he makes the crowd dance everywhere he goes. He doesn’t dance, but makes his audience dance, and that is what a good DJ is all about,” emphasised Deidree.
