Secunda sangoma seeks to help four young people to further their education

Young people who are interested in pursuing electrical engineering, are urged to apply for the bursary fund.

Passionate about a lot of things, “ubungoma” (a gift from the ancestors) and education are close to Gogo Tyra Manzini’s heart.

Against all odds, Gogo Manzini has become a trusted gay sangoma in Secunda and on social media platforms such as YouTube. He is a proud cross-dresser and his calling has allowed him to give back to his community.

Manzini has vouched to sponsor four young people who are eager to further their education. “I have a bursary scheme that will allow these four people to train at the Electricons Training Academy in Ivory Park in Gauteng. I am offering two males and two females R56 000 each for their trade test training and preparation for electrical engineering. I am seeking the most deserving young people in Secunda,” he said.

Gogo Manzini was raised by his aunt, who has passed away, and applauded her for instilling such beliefs in him. “My aunt taught me to give back with whatever I have. She was overprotective of me and she felt more pain than I did when I was judged by the community for being who I am. She gave me the confidence to accept myself as a gay sangoma, and today people give me the respect I deserve. I appreciate her so much.”

He said giving back to the community is very important to him. “From what I have achieved, I am able to assist people and give them a chance to become what they dream to be. That is why I want to fund those who can prove they are in need for the funds.

“Each student will be liable for their accommodation and booking assessment and trade testing fees, which will amount to R2 250. Candidates will be responsible for their own food and toiletries. The training duration will be for six weeks, beginning in August,” he continued.

Gogo Manzini explained that interested applicants will have to prove that they need the funds, are above the age of 21, and have a relevant N2 certificate including the four relevant subjects (technical trade theory programme quality-assured by a SETA deemed to be equivalent to NQF level 3; a relevant engineering certificate with seven subjects at NQF level 3; a technical Grade 11 with mathematics and science; or a relevant N6 certificate or national technical diploma).
