Needy family in Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality benefits by a new house on Madiba Day

The donation was courtesy of various stakeholders, including Motheo Construction.

The Makena family from Dikgwale Village in Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality received a fully furnished, sponsored house, blankets and groceries, courtesy of Motheo Construction.

As promised a few months ago during a sod-turning ceremony, the MEC for human settlements, Speedy Mashilo, handed over the house to the family in collaboration with the Nkangala District, Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality and Motheo Construction as part of Mandela Day commemorations.

During the handover, Mashilo applauded Motheo Construction for partnering with Government to change the lives of ordinary people in disadvantaged communities.

“I am happy that we are here as leadership from various political parties and departments to celebrate uTata Mandela. First and foremost, I want to thank Motheo Construction for their generous response to help the Makenas, who had been living in terrible conditions,” Mashilo said.

“We cannot reach out to each and every citizen. So, those who are more fortunate must appreciate what they already have and plough back into their communities.”

Mmangakane Nurse Makena (52) could not hold back her tears of joy when she received her house keys. “I am so grateful that the contractor adhered to the specification of the house to cater for my child’s special needs.”

The team also distributed 100 blankets to the elderly and patched potholes in partnership with the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport.

Motheo Construction’s project manager, Lebo Zwane, said the handover was a great privilege, given that the late Dr Thandi Ndlovu, the founder of Motheo Construction, believed in giving back to the needy. “Today we are pleased to see how happy the family are and that their lives will never be the same again. We have indeed honoured Madiba’s wishes.”

Motheo Construction was established 25 years ago and has built over 90 000 government-subsidised houses throughout South Africa.
