Lowveld Walkers hit the streets to raise awareness on albinism

Joseph Mashaba, the founder of Lowveld Walkers, said the members' commitment keeps the organisation growing.

Lowveld Walkers continue to raise awareness on issues affecting the community on a daily basis through their weekly events. Last Saturday, July 2, they held an Albinism Awareness Walk at Rocky Drift.

They walked from there to the Engen Garage in Chief Mgiyeni Khumalo Street in White River. Participants could choose from distances of 10km, 15km and 21km.
According to Joseph Mashaba, the founder of the organisation, it is one of the events they do annually to help create awareness on albinism in the communities. “The aim is to stand against the brutal killings of people living with albinism.”

Mashaba said the turnout was great and it was a fun-filled day.
“Last year we had only two people living with the condition in attendance, and this year we had more than 20 people who joined us on the walk.

“The fact that they brought friends and family members so they can come to learn more about the condition, really warmed up my heart. They got to share their experiences with the participants and the challenges they face in their society.

“They shared their experience how they were bullied from early childhood and how they were scared of walking freely in the streets. It was an eye-opening presentation for me.”

Lowveld Walkers usually walk on Saturdays, but the event supposed to be held on July 9 was cancelled. Visit them on Facebook or contact Mashaba on 076 444 2343.
