Mpumalanga MEC for human settlements donates a house for Mandela Day

The theme for Mandela Day 2022 is "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are".

As part of honouring the former president Nelson Mandela’s legacy of promoting selflessness and doing good for society, the Mpumalanga MEC for human settlements, Speedy Mashilo, donated a house to Mndazi Dube (73) today, July 15, in Nhlazatshe 7. He also handed over 50 blankets to identified beneficiaries.

July 18 has been declared International Nelson Mandela Day, but South Africans embrace the chance to celebrate his life throughout the month of July.
This gives everyone the opportunity to heed the call to action, and to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.

Dube uses a wheelchair and takes care of her three grandchildren through her pension grant. The family used to stay in a mud house.
Mashilo said she will now sleep comfortably. “We are donating this house as a gift to Granny. We would like her to take care of the house with her children. Our aim is not only for people to own houses, but also to own title deeds.”

Mashilo was accompanied by Gert Sibande District Municipality’s executive mayor, Cllr Walter Mngomezulu, the executive mayor of Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality, Cllr Dan Nkosi, and other stakeholders.

Of the three sessions to be held this month to honour Madiba, this was the first. It will be followed by a project handover in Iswepe, Mkhondo Local Municipality, on Monday July 18, and patching of potholes, and another handover on Tuesday July 19 in Dikgwale, Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality.
