Construction of water supply project from Loskop Dam to begin in August

The interprovincial pipeline project is expected to be completed in a year's time.

The bulk pipeline construction of the Loskop Dam water supply project for communities in Thembisile Hani Local Municipality (THLM) will commence in August.

So said the minister of water and sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, yesterday during a visit to the Loskop Dam.

A delegation of executive mayors from all benefiting municipalities, as well as Mchunu and the MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs, Mandla Ndlovu, was led by Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane.

Mchunu emphasised the importance of the speedy completion of the project to ensure the communities have access to water as soon as possible.
The project will include a bulk pipeline from Loskop Dam to THLM for domestic water supply to about 130 000 households, abstraction and water treatment works, pump stations and storage reservoirs.

The pipeline will pass through the Moutse East area in the Sekhukhune District Municipality in Limpopo and will supply treated water to eight villages through water treatment works and the distribution network.

Mchunu called for the guarding and monitoring of the project to ensure that it is not riddled with corruption.
“Let me make it clear that that will never happen under my watch. This project will succeed. Let us move on with it. There is only one thing that must prevail, and that is providing people with water.”

Mtshweni-Tsipane echoed Mchunu about the importance of monitoring of the project.
“We must guard against shoddy workmanship by contractors. We must come up with a coordination structure from the political and technocrat levels to look at the project until the end,” she said.

Mtshweni-Tsipane said the Mpumalanga Government welcomed the integration of the project with Limpopo.
