Still no funding to construct road in Marongwane Village

Marongwane community members torched three trucks on Tuesday May 24.

Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport said there are no funds to construct the provincial road, the D3975, that traverses the villages of Thusanang, Oakley and Marongwane between Mkhuhlu and the R40.

“The road is a commuter route that will be considered for paving or tarring in the long term, because currently Mpumalanga does not have enough funding to meet the needs throughout the province,” said the department’s spokesperson, Bongani Dhlamini. During the month of May, community members have been protesting for the construction of the road.

They closed down Marongwane Primary School on Tuesday May 24.

A message addressed to the MEC for public works, Mohita Latchminarain, was left outside the school, allegedly stating, “Last warning, Baba!” One of the protest leaders, who did not want to reveal his name, said no one wants to hear their cries.

“We are constantly being referred to the relevant people, but we still receive no help. They also told us that the MEC would come last Tuesday, but she still has not set foot here. We are sick and tired of not being taken seriously.”
