Ligwalagwala FM celebrates 40 years in style

Ligwalagwala FM currently boasts a listenership of over 1.3m and with the variety of both youthful and more experienced presenters, the station continues to grow.

Imagine celebrating 40 years with 40 taxis on the R40. Total awesomeness.

This is how the SABC-owned siSwati broadcasting radio station, Ligwalagwala FM, celebrated its 40th anniversary.

The week-long festivities began with mall activations around the region, where the station’s presenters interacted with their loyal listeners.

The veteran presenter, now programme manager and acting business manager of Mpumalanga Combo, Ntfonjana Dlamini, believes Ligwalagwala will soar to even greater heights and that the best is yet to come.

“We come a long way from 1982 and looking back, we can boldly say that we are proud of our achievements and to have played a major role in shaping and changing our listeners’ lives. We have empowered and enriched many people,” said Dlamini.

“We always pride ourselves as one of the stations that really takes care of its listeners, because we know and understand that we exist because of them.”
Dlamini said with technology changing and taking centre stage, there is a huge need for their programming to adjust and to embrace this.

“We are in an technological era and we should address that as well. It shouldn’t be a case of one hearing a program on radio, but not even being able to get it on social media or a podcast. So it’s important that we do more in bettering ourselves for the benefit of our listeners,” said Dlamini
