Campaign launched in Bushbuckridge to rejuvenate school environment

Many schools in the province participated in this campaign, keeping their schools and its surroundings clean.

The Rhandza Xikolo Xa Wena Campaign sets out to condemn all social ills that find their way into schools, such as bullying, corporal punishment, drug trafficking and gangsterism.

The Rhandza Xikolo Xa Wena Campaign was launched in Ngwaritsane Secondary School in Bushbuckridge on Tuesday May 17.

The deputy minister of justice and correctional services, Nkosi Phathekile Holomisa, the MEC for education, Bonakele Majuba, and Bushbuckridge executive mayor Cllr Sylvia Nxumalo launched this programme.

According to Majuba, the campaign seeks to rejuvenate the school environment by fostering partnerships with school communities and other stakeholders and form an alliance in school rehabilitation.

“As the month of May is Workers’ Month, it is important that we all roll our sleeves up to work towards the development of our communities. The campaign seeks to protect schools from any form of vandalism, fix broken school property, plant flowers and create vegetable gardens.

“We are here to commit to a partnership with the people of Bohlabela, to put respect and dignity back in our schools and highlight the importance education plays in the eradication of the triple challenges facing our province.”

Majuba said the department will work together with correctional services. “The Department of Education and correctional services will sign a service-level agreement for the employment of offenders in schools to repair furniture, rehabilitation and other related services. This is in line with correctional services’ new approach, in which offenders do not sit idle in their cells while incarcerated, but instead contribute to community-building projects.”
