Barberton dangerous escapee rearrested

The inmate escaped from Medium B Correctional Center last Thursday.

The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that the sentenced-to-life Shabangu Amos Mashaba, who had escaped from the Barberton Correctional Centre on April 14, was rearrested on Tuesday night in Mhlambanyathi near Hazyview.

Mashaba was convicted in 2003 for murder, rape, theft and robbery.

The department has also confirmed that a further charge of escape will be added.

“He has been placed in lawful custody to continue serving his sentence in a maximum security correctional facility. Meanwhile, the search for Juneal Jacobs, who escaped from the Malmesbury Correctional Centre last week, continues. He was among three remanded detainees who had escaped, and was awaiting trial for murder before he had done so. The two others have been rearrested,” said Sechaba Mphahlele, the departmental spokesperson.

He said the department is working around the clock with other law enforcement agencies to find him, while investigations on circumstances that led to the escape of the inmates are also continuing.

“The department remains committed to incarcerate inmates in a safe and secure custody in the process of rehabilitating them,” he said.
