School safety seminar discusses security at length

School safety and security have once again become the centre of attention, following the recent attack on teachers at gunpoint at the Masoyi based Khulani and Mdumseni primary schools.

HAZYVIEW – According to a provincial police spokesman, Brig Selvy Mohlala, on Monday February 7 and Wednesday February 9, two armed suspects allegedly gained access to the two above-mentioned schools after pretending to be parents.

Once they were inside, they produced firearms and threatened the teachers before robbing them of items such as cellphones, laptops and cash. “Fortunately, after these incidents were reported, the police followed a tip that led to the arrest of two suspects who were found with some of the stolen items,” said Mohlala.

During this session the member of the national parliament, Desmond Moela, discussed the issue of using professional security companies in schools.

“The fight against crime in our schools, need all of us to join forces and come to the space and protect our schools, learners and teachers. Crime happens in our communities, committed by people we know. It is therefore prudent that our communities must come together and work with our schools and the police so that we can put an end to crime in our schools. If we don’t do this, our efforts will always remain a talk show,” said Moela. ” Our learners and teachers no longer feel safe in our schools,” continued Moela,

“I would therefore like to plead with everyone, from traditional leadership, school governing bodies, teacher unions and the police to work together in this regard. Maybe it is time we have professional security companies manning all our schools.”

Such environments are meant for teaching and learning.”

Various stakeholders participated in this session and Moela believes that the solution to ending crime in schools is imminent. “We need to find lasting solutions and if we work together, I have no doubt that victory is certain,” concluded Moela.
