Karatekas show mettle at championships

The Universal Shotokan Karate Union (USKU) emerged victorious at the Ehlanzeni Regional Championships held in Lydenburg on Saturday February 5.

During these games, USKU represented the City of Mbombela and went head to head against Bushbuckridge, Nkomazi and Thaba Chweu local municipalities, who came equally prepared and gave their best.

USKU will now represent Ehlanzeni District during the provincial championships scheduled to be held in Delmas.

The 12 karatekas who won the competition were awarded with gold, silver and bronze medals in different categories.

Their chief instructor, Sifiso Sindane, expressed his excitement after the victory and said he still believed they were going to win in the coming provincial championships. “Words cannot explain the happiness I am feeling right now. We worked very hard to win this tournament and we will invest twice the energy in the coming provincial competition. I believe that we will win this and even go to the national tournament to be held in Durban,” he said.

Sindane said the overall champion of the Ehlanzeni District was in his team. “Mphilo Mabunda, a learner of Lekazi Primary School, was voted the overall champion of the district. He was awarded gold medals for both kata and kumite. He competed with the senior boys in kata and won that category, hence he was awarded the trophies for kata.

Another shining star, who is physically challenged, competed with abled girls in kata and won a gold medal. This is a true indication that we are doing an excellent job and walking in the right path.” He said even if they do not win in the coming competitions, they would be proud of their achievement and will use this as a learning experience.
