United community effort keeps KaNyamazane clean

The programme has since grown to a total of 14 projects, with five in Nkangala, two in Bohlabela, one in Gert Sibande and six in the Ehlanzeni District.

As a way to keep the environment clean and safe for the community, the Imvelo Recycling Kanyamazane co, went out to clean an illegal dumping site in Mngwenya. Imvelo Recycling Kanyamazane co is part of the Zonda Insila Programme (ZIP). The Zonda Insila Programme (ZIP) was first launched in Breyton in the Msukaligwa Local Municipality in March 2019, with only four projects.

The programme has since grown to a total of 14 projects, with five in Nkangala, two in Bohlabela, one in Gert Sibande and six in the Ehlanzeni District. Portia Olga Mathebula from the Imvelo Recycling Kanyamazane co said,” We saw the need to clean up that area because some of the community members raised their concerns about their health and safety.

They said due to the dumping site they had flies in their homes, and they were experiencing air pollution and land pollution. A dumping site can also be a good place for criminals to hide.” Mathebula said the local programme consists of community members from Kanyamazane that are dedicated to bringing change in their community. “The residents decided that they want to be part of change and keep their community clean. Their dedication is improving the environment,” she explained.

According to her, a clean community can only be achieved if everyone works together. “We want to the community to know that with the help of City of Mbombela Local Municipality we have managed to clean the area and we would like to urge them to keep it clean. If the residents do not dump their refuse illegally and follow the right channels we can all keep the area clean. If they do not know what to do or how to go about it they can contact us and we will show them the right way to get rid of refuse.
