Street robbery suspect arrested in White River

De Bruyn’s warning comes after Fidelity ADT reaction officers helped arrest a suspect who had allegedly robbed a pedestrian in White River.

Fidelity ADT’s branch manager, Joe de Bruyn, has cautioned community members to be wary of criminals targeting people waiting for either taxis or buses on their way to and from work.

De Bruyn’s warning comes after Fidelity ADT reaction officers helped arrest a suspect who had allegedly robbed a pedestrian in White River.

“These criminals are looking for laptops, smart phones and other gadgets that are light and portable, and easy to convert into cash. “Criminals are very brazen in this country, and with the high unemployment rate, the number of incidents are increasing.

They either scam you or ask to use your phone and then hold you up, or if you are on your phone, walk past and accost you,” said De Bruyn.

On Saturday January 29 at approximately 22:00, Fidelity ADT reaction officers were performing a routine patrol in the CBD when they noticed a member of the public chasing after a suspect.

They immediately joined in the chase and soon after managed to apprehend the suspect just before he got to the taxi rank. On further investigation, the member of the public informed the officers that the suspect had robbed him while he was waiting for the bus at the bus stop. It was discovered that the suspect had grabbed a few victims’ cellphones and wallets.

The suspect was searched and all the stolen items were found in his possession and handed over to the White River SAPS.

“Unfortunately, many cases go unreported as people are left traumatised and fearing for their lives. It is very important, however, that they do open a case with the police so that these criminals can be removed from the streets. I commend our officers for their swift action. Fidelity ADT remains committed to the safety of our communities and we’re working closely with the SAPS and community organisations to make the areas safer for all residents,” De Bruyn concluded.
