SAPS tackles illegal mining

The provincial police are slowly winning the fight against illegal mining.

EMALAHLENI – The week-long operation consisted of visible policing, public order policing, detective services, crime intelligence and the security from Anglo American.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Brig Selvy Mohlala, this time the illegal miners were found in another illegal mining site in Elpaso within the eMalahleni Policing Precinct.

The site was formerly used by Anglo American as its official mining site.

“Two coal screeners, a generator, two diesel bowsers, a roller, a trailer, a water tanker, a TLB, a Toyota Hilux, a VW Polo Classic, a Nissan NP200, an Opel Astra and a BMW were also confiscated by the police during the operation.

“The team also conducted an operation at Schoongezight coal dump on January 18, in which a further 17 suspects were taken for questioning,” said Mohlala.
