Home-based care enlightens public

The initiative was established due to the ever-rising number of human rights violations across Mpumalanga.

Obrigado Home Based Care (OHBC) and its sponsor, Show Me Your Number, have teamed up and embarked on a journey to educate the community about human rights.

The initiative was established due to the ever-rising number of human rights violations across Mpumalanga. OHBC is an organisation that provides human rights violation assistance and guidance under its stigma and discrimination programme that is meant to identify, prevent and alleviate human suffering and foster human dignity, safety and security in all communities.

As a way to spread the message, community members were given T-shirts and books to read that detail different human rights and what steps to take whenever their rights are violated. Kgotatso Mathebula, the project coordinator, said they realised that citizens within the borders of Ehlanzeni District know very little about their rights and how they are violated. “Our communities are not informed. They seem to be informed that there is a bill of rights, but do not know how to claim or put them into practice,” he said.

Mathebula added that anyone who is in need of help regarding the violation of their rights, may approach their offices at Zoeknoeg for assistance or alternatively approach the nearest police station.

Molebogeng Sithole, one of the community members, said she was grateful for the teachings from OHBC as they were an eye-opener to her. “I realised that my rights have been violated more than once without me being aware. I once went to a public healthcare institution for medication, but I was sent away without help. That was a violation of my right to healthcare. Had I known back then, I would have taken steps. I am grateful to Obrigado for their teachings because now I know where to turn to should I feel that my rights are violated in any way,” said Sithole.
