Former cop gets 41 years in prison

A former police officer was sentenced by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court to 41 years’ imprisonment last Friday for two counts of murder and one attempted murder.

MBOMBELA – According to information, the 41-year-old convicted, Irvin Bonginkosi Malinga, killed his lover, Nomvula Mhawule, and Sibusiso Khoza.

The provincial NPA’s spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said Malinga was off duty on December 29, 2019, the day of the incident.

“Even though off duty, he carried his service pistol and had taken one extra magazine to a tavern in Pienaar. Upon his arrival, he found Mhawule in the company of a male friend, drew his firearm and fatally shot both of them, while a third victim sustained injuries. The accused handed himself over to the police and was subsequently arrested,” said Nyuswa.

“The testimony of the survivors and witnesses was credible enough. They testified about how the crime had happened on the day and their evidence was supported by the post-mortem report, which confirmed that the victims’ cause of death had been gunshot wounds, which led to Malinga being found guilty as charged.”
