Eskom blamed for load reduction

Frustrated residents in the Nsikazi area have expressed their grievances over the constant load reduction they experienced.

KANYAMAZANE – According to them, the problem started around November.

Some of them shared their challenges on social media. Tebogo Mbongeni, one of the community members, alleged that Eskom is to blame for this problem.

“This problem started a while ago and it’s nothing new to us, but what frustrated me the most, is that even during the festive season we experienced this neverending problem. “It was time for us to enjoy ourselves, but we could not. Eskom is incompetent and this treatment is unfair,” he said.

Another concerned resident, Zodwa Mbuyeni, alleged that they were not notified about the schedule of the load reduction and this had hampered their daily activities.

“The only thing they could have done, was to make sure that we receive the schedule for the various areas so that we could prepare our things accordingly. “We are just inconvenienced out of the blue. We are now afraid that our electrical appliances will burn due to this problem,” she said.

Eric Khoza, the spokesperson for Eskom, said in a statement that was sent to Lowvelder Express, that Eskom had identified areas with significantly high theft of electricity mainly from residential customers.

“Illegal connections, meter bypasses and tampering with electricity infrastructure have increased over the years and continue to cause repeated failures and explosions of Eskom electrical equipment as a result of overloading,” Khoza said.

He added that Eskom started to implement load reduction that resulted in network overloading during peak periods from 05:00 to 09:00 and from 17:00 to 21:00.
