Trigger-happy man nabbed

A 38-year-old man facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, unlawful discharge of a firearm in public, as well as defeating the ends of justice, briefly appeared in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

MKHUHLU – A police spokesperson, Brig Selvy Mohlala, said the police had received information earlier that day about a man who had apparently been brandishing a firearm in a tavern in Mkhuhlu, and immediately went to attend to the matter.

“The police arrived at the tavern and found the man air. Upon seeing the police, the suspect got into his vehicle and drove off, but the officers followed him. They managed to stop the vehicle, conducted a search, found him in possession of the unlicensed firearm and apprehended him,” explained Mohlala.

“The provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Semakaleng Manamela, has applauded the members for attending to the matter speedily, more so as the suspect’s reckless behaviour could have put many lives at risk,” he said.

The suspect has been remanded in custody and the case was postponed to January 21.
