Continuous rainfall poses serious threat to roads

The recent heavy rainfall in the Lowveld region of Mpumalanga has once again left two bridges on the brink of collapse.

KANYAMAZANE – The two bridges situated within the City of Mbombela, one in KaNyamazane Section 1 next to the traffic lights and the other in KaBokweni connecting Maporo and Bhejukufa sections, could collapse any day now.

Motorists and community members from these two large townships have taken to social media to complain about these bridges, and called for government to act quickly to repair them.

Last January, a bridge linking KaNyamazane and Tekwane South collapsed in heavy rainfall.

The bridge is currently under repairs. The City’s spokesperson, Joseph Ngala, has since appealed to motorists to consider using alternative roads for safety’s sake. “As a precautionary measure, motorists are advised to use alternative routes to prevent further damage and accidents,” he said.

According to him, the extent of the damage is being assessed in order to either partially close the road or to close it completely while it is being repaired
