Fostering change through awareness walk

They walked to raise awareness for gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide.

As the country embarks on the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign today, November 25, the Lowveld Walkers already started this drive last Saturday. They walked to raise awareness for gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide.

They began at the Tekwane South soccer field and walked to the KMI Airport Road and back. This annual campaign is from November 25 to December 10. The theme for 2021 is “The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke: 16 Days of Activism – Moving from Awareness to Accountability”.

The walk was once again attended by a survivor of GBV, MEC Mohita Latchminarain.

Last year, Latchminarain joined the Lowveld Walkers for this initiative. Joseph Mashaba, founder of Lowveld Walkers, said the event was overwhelming. “In the four years of our existence, the recent walk has made the greatest impact. When we were on the road walking, people waved and clapped hands. Taxi drivers stopped their vehicles. Some people stopped their vehicles to collect our pamphlets. This was a great event, the people responded positively to our initiative.”

Mashaba said he appreciated all the support they received from their sponsors, public, team members and Latchminarain.
