City of Mbombela elects new political leadership

This first council sitting went smoothly without any disturbances.

Mpumalanga’s City of Mbombela has new political leadership that was elected unopposed on Tuesday November 23 at the iconic Mbombela Stadium.

Cllr Sibongile Makushe was elected as the City’s mayor with Cllr William Nkatha coming in as the council speaker. Veteran politician and MKVA member Cllr Taylor Nsimbini retained his position as chief whip. These three top positions were nominated and accepted without any rejection from the opposition.

This first council sitting went smoothly without any disturbances. However, they had been anticipated since a number of aggrieved ANC members had staged a protest at the provincial offices of the ruling party yesterday (November 22). The disgruntled members had accused the current provincial executive of manipulating councillorship positions.

During Makushe’s acceptance speech she said corruption would be the thing of the past. “We accept this task of leading the executive arm of council with a great deal of humility and appreciation. We make a commitment to this house and our communities out there that we have a zero-tolerance stance towards corruption,” she said.
