Full steam ahead with exams despite storm

The ongoing grade 12 examination will not be hindered by the recent heavy storm which destroyed 13 schools in the Nkomazi region.

So said the provincial Department of Education on Monday following MEC Bonakele Majuba’s visit to the affected schools.

The departmental spokesperson, Jasper Zwane, confirmed that though the storm had destroyed many schools, the grade 12 exams would continue as planned and without any disruptions.

The KaMhlushwa-based Sidlamafa Secondary School was identified as one of the badly affected schools. The storm ripped off classroom roofs and mobile classrooms were ripped from the ground.

“Fortunately, the grade 12 national certificate examination is progressing well in all the schools, including the ones that were affected by the storm. The department will work with the school governing bodies to monitor progress,” said Zwane.

MEC Majuba revealed that his department had planned to have this particular school rebuilt, but those plans were halted due to Covid-19. Sidlamafa Secondary School is one of the oldest within this subregion. It was built in the 1960s. “We had plans to rebuild Sidlamafa by January, but we were derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.” Majuba also affirmed that the grade 12 classrooms were not affected, and that the learners would continue writing their exams. “For now, we will only fix the mobile classrooms, since some learners need to write their internal exams.”
