All systems go for matric exams

This year, a record-breaking 69 260 learners will write the final grade 12 examinations.

This was announced by the Mpumalanga MEC for education, Bonakele Majuba, during a provincial prayer session in preparation for the final examination at Sigweje Secondary School in KaMdladla on Thursday.

In 2019, a total of 56 833 learners sat down for the final exam, and in 2020, only 56 030 registered to write. The final exams officially start today, Wednesday October 27.

Majuba said he was confident the class of 2021 would not disappoint, despite the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Learners themselves responded positively by adhering to the call to be at school on time and to perform their learning tasks as required of them with zeal and zest,” he said.

“Given that this examination will be held within the context of Covid-19, it will be important for candidates and examination centres to comply with health and safety protocols. All learners throughout the province and the country have just signed a pledge of good conduct.” He urged the learners to continue working hard and to study all their prescribed content in each subject, also by going through their previous examination papers.

Sigweje Secondary School was among the top achievers of 2020 with a pass rate of 83.9% within the Nkomazi circuit.

A grade 12 learner from this school, Mimbili Giadelen, said, “Our teachers have provided us with everything, including creating WhatsApp groups in order for us to catch up with our work. I am excited to be writing my exams for the national senior certificate and I am ready.”

The 2021 matric results will be announced on Friday January 21, 2022, at the University of Mpumalanga.
