Cele wants Amaberet back

The police minister, Bheki Cele, has promised to revitalise the defunct Tactical Response Team (TRT) unit famously known as Amaberet.

Heading the call earlier made by the Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, Cele vowed to revive and bring more TRT members to help reduce crime.

“We do have members of the TRT, but we need to talk about increasing the numbers. But they have always been here. Fortunately, MEC Shongwe wants the unit to be more visible in the province and I am sure he will speak to the national commissioner to help him increase the numbers in Mpumalanga,” said Cele.

The police minister accompanied by Shongwe, the national police commissioner, Gen Kehla Sitole, and the provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Semakaleng Manamela, were in Mpumalanga to officiate the opening of the new Daggakraal Police Station in the Gert Sibande District Municipality.

Shongwe, who has been vocal about the return of this unit, said he was happy that Cele is in support of the TRT running the streets again.

“I am pleased the minister has given us blessings to ask for more TRT members. I have always maintained that this unit was effective. Yes, they are aggressive in their approach, but they get the job done. I am certain that if we have more people, we would be able to intensify the fight against crime in Mpumalanga,” said Shongwe.

“I am not saying that the current crop of SAPS isn’t good enough, but what I am saying is that they need support. And the backup we have is the TRT,” added Shongwe.

During the official opening of the police station, Daggaskraal community members complained to Cele and Shongwe about the ill treatment they are receiving from white farmers. They claimed that many people have died at the hands of farmers and the police are not assisting
