ANC to ask wrongly elected candidate councillors to resign

The ANC’s deputy president, David Mabuza, has promised that the ruling party will ask its elected ward councillors in the upcoming local government elections to step down if it is discovered that their nomination did not follow procedure.

One ANC community member told Mpumalanga News and Mabuza that the provincial party structures had already given them a ward candidate with a rape case that is still pending. The deputy president was asked about people’s dissatisfaction in certain ANC quarters regarding candidates who had made the party’s list.

“I will come back after the elections, because I can see they are raising it very seriously. I’ll come, sit down, and we are going to escalate this matter to the national office. There is nothing, really, we can do now. We are not going to change any candidate. But after November 1, we can sit down and discuss this problem,” said Mabuza.

“If the current candidate was wrongly elected, then we will request that person to resign. This is the route that we are taking. There are disputes that we have not resolved, and we have said people must wait until after the elections. We’ll attend to the disputes. We’ll attend to them all. We are not going to betray our people. And if the people are unhappy, it is our concern, and we will correct it,” he continued.

Mabuza was in Bushbuckridge trying to woo voters to vote for the ANC on November 1. Community members told him that there are some challenges that need to be addressed such as the provision of clean running water, improved roads and electricity.

“We will attend to all these problems. I am happy with the work that has been done and achieved by this municipality. I see many paved roads and other community projects. This is sign that it is on the right track,” said Mabuza.

Despite these issues raised by the locals, he said he was confident of a victory in this municipality. This is one of the ANC’s strongholds and the deputy president strongly believes they will retain it with an overwhelming majority.

Mabuza has also called for unity within the organisation, arguing that internal squabbles will further harm and bring division within the party. “We need to be united as ever so that our communities can have confidence in us. Unity is the only way to go,” he said.
