R10 000 bail for fraud accused

A 31-year-old man accused of corruption and defeating the ends of justice was released on R10 000 bail. Mpendulo Sipho Mapalala appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on August 10 following his arrest in a joint operation by the Hawks’ National Serious Corruption Investigation and the Special Investigative Unit (SIU).

According to the charge sheet, he was arrested after he had allegedly offered and handed over R50 000 to the complainant, a SIU official, in order to have a case relating to personal protective equipment against his sister disappear.

Monica Nyisa, the spokesperson for the Mpumalanga NPA, said the State did not oppose Mapalala’s bail. “His residential and work addresses have been verified; he has no previous convictions. The matter falls within the ambit of schedule 1 offences,” she said. The matter was postponed to October 5 for further investigation.
