Bellas Athletics club marches against GBV

With gender-based violence (GBV) being a widespread problem in South Africa, Bellas Athletics Club held an awareness event on Saturday in remembrance of one of their members, Tebogo MatsaneMabunda, who was allegedly gunned down by her husband last May.

Bellas Athletics Club felt it was indebted to Mabunda and her family as she was a dedicated member of the club. They mobilised the community to march from Mbombela Stadium to the CBD to raise awareness regarding this scourge.

Bonginkosi Zitha, the club spokesperson, said one of the reasons they had decided to host this event was to fight for justice for
Mabunda.

He further explained that the club is against any form of violence. Moris Maiga, one of the club members, said he joined the club because of its stance against GBV. “I am against this thing of people feeling superior over other people. We should all live peacefully among one
another and be happy. I came here today to raise my voice that people, especially men, should stop killing our women,” Maiga said.
