Customer claims a retailer in Mbombela sold her rotten goods

Her attempts to exchange the rotten goods for fresh ones proved fruitless.

A 36-year-old self-employed mother of four is demanding fairness and good customer service from a retail shop in town.

This happened after she allegedly bought rotten stock from the shop. Lucy Mhlabane (not her real name due to fear of being victimised) alleged that she had bought packets of frozen potato chips and burgers on May 11, only to find them spoiled the following morning.

“The chips were almost dark incolour. Checking the burgers, they were also spoiled and had a funny texture,” she said. Mhlabane added that her attempts to exchange the rotten goods for fresh ones proved fruitless. She indicated that she was taking the matter to the Consumer Rights Commission in Mbombela.

“I had tried several times to engage with the management of the shop, but they just sent me from pillar to post. This experience was so frustrating. All I needed was for them to hear me out, show ubuntu and either refund me or gave me fresh stuff,” she said. A response to a media inquiry sent to the shop had not been received at the time of going to print.
