Family of children who died in fire supported by community’s kindness

Locals and private organisations around Masoyi and Mbombela showed kindness when they unanimously helped the grieving family of the two cousins who had tragically died in a housefire last week.

The cousins, Noxolo Mlotshwa (7) and Mandisa Maseko (9), were laid to rest in Jerusalem Cemetery on Saturday morning. Days prior to their funeral, locals donated food parcels, a tent and water. One of the major contributors was financial service provider, Old Mutual, and Lowveld Media in Mbombela.

Old Mutual’s branch manager, Sibongile Mkhonto, said, “It felt good when we contributed where we can and where there was a need. It was like ploughing on a fertile soil; however, I felt it was not enough. As a business we have a social responsibility to plough back into the community we serve without expecting any profit in return. Making a difference to the needy is more important,” she said.

The victim’s grandmother, Grace Mhaule, thanked all organisations who had helped to give her granddaughters a dignified funeral. She added that the family was still not at ease, as the suspect in connection with the alleged arson and murder has yet to be arrested.

“Rumours say he was seen at night around Mganduzweni and Mshadza. We wish the police would make an arrest quickly, so that the family may get some closure. He must be arrested, prosecuted and jailed for his act and the pain he has caused the family,” she said.

Mhaule added that the mothers of the two victims, Delsile (42) and Elizabeth (37), were still traumatised and needed counselling. “They are trying to be strong, but as an elder I can see that they are not okay. We would appreciate some form of counselling for the whole family,” she said.
