Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane said during the Freedom Day celebrations in Balfour in the Dipaleseng Local Municipality, Mpumalanga’s citizens need to be free to celebrate the democracy they had fought so hard for.

She urged the public to remember stalwart and internationally renowned Mama Charlotte Maxeke. “Mama Charlotte Maxeke made a very significant contribution to free disenfranchised men and women in South Africa, when it was not easy to do so. She overcame impossible odds,” Mtshweni-Tsipane said.

The premier encouraged women to continue leading the struggle against gender-based violence.

“I urge men to join in dismantling the systems that undermined and denied women the ability to fully utilise their basic human rights.”
