Life of prayer keeps 107 year old gogo going

One of the oldest gogos in the province is 107-year-old Ayina Ndubane. She is looking forward to her 108th birthday in August.

Gogo Ndubane had survived many storms, plagues and cyclones. She had lived to see her fourth generation of descendants. “I always pray to God to give me and my children more life and good health,” she said.

Asked if she was aware of Covid-19 and if she would vaccinate against the pandemic, she quickly said, “That flue had killed many. I will vaccinate although I am scared of a injection. It’s been a long time since I last had any injection, but because we want to live I will take it,” she said.

The brilliant, ever-smiling Ndubane said the power of prayer and the relationship she has with God kept her going this far.

“I don’t know if I am really 107 years as stated in my ID, but God knows the truth. I always ask God to give me more years,” she said.

Unlike many elders of her age, Ndubane’s hearing and mental abilities are still functioning well. In a recent interview with her, she was able to express herself with very little help from her family.

She still recognises all her grandchildren and calls them by their names. She is not on any chronic medication. Ndubane’s favourite meals includes boiled meat, vegetables and pap. She loves tea, sweets and cakes. “Of all the kinds of meat my favourite is goat’s meat,” she said. Ndubane is still able to feed and bath herself. She still enjoys sweeping the yard, even though she is not as fast as she used to be. Her husband died years ago and she never remarried. She urged married couples to pray for their marriages and their children.
